THE TAP DANCE KID CLOSED
On August 11th, 1985: The Tap Dance Kid closed at the Broadhurst Theatre after 669 performances. Written by Charles Blackwell with music by Henry Krieger and lyrics by Robert Lorick, the musical received mixed reviews; one New York Times reviewer praised the choreography (indeed, The Tap Dance Kid won the Tony for Best Choreography) and several actors’ individual performances, but saw the plot as “earnest [but] plodding” and the music forgettable. Ouch.
BRIAN MULLEN HAD A STROKE
On August 11th, 1993: Former New York Islander Brian Mullen suffered a minor stroke. The then-31-year-old born and raised Manhattanite had played 11 seasons in the National Hockey League as a forward when he was afflicted by the stroke, from which he made a speedy recovery.
KEVIN MAAS SET A RECORD
On August 11th, 1990: Former New York Yankee Kevin Maas set a record for fastest rookie to hit 13 home runs with 110 at-bats. The newbie would soon go on to set another record for fastest rookie to 15 with 133 at-bats. He ended his career five years later with a batting average of .23, 65 home runs, and 169 runs batted in.
