THE SELWYN OPENED FOR BUSINESS

On October 3, 1918: The Selwyn Theatre opened at 227 42nd Street with 1,180 seats. The venue was renovated and reopened in 2000 as the American Airlines Theatre.

SHOT HEARD ‘ROUND THE WORLD

On October 3, 1951: New York Giants outfielder Bobby Thomson hit a pennant-winning, three-run home run off Brooklyn Dodgers pitcher Ralph Branca at the Polo Grounds. The homer became known as the “shot heard ’round the world.”

On October 3, 1988: Rapper Rakim Mayers, aka A$AP Rocky, was born in Harlem. A$AP Rocky is a member of the hip hip collaborative ASAP mob and a record producer under the pseudonym “Lord Flacko.”
