MR. BARSIMSON GOES TO NEW AMSTERDAM
On August 22, 1654: Jacob Barsimson arrived in New Amsterdam (aka old school New York City) aboard the Peartree, becoming one of the earliest Jewish settlers to land in the area. Barsimson left the Netherlands on July 8th after Jewish leaders sent him to determine the possibility of extensive Jewish immigration to New Amsterdam.
GLOBETROTTIN’ IN BERLIN
On August 22, 1951: The Harlem Globetrotters played in the Olympic Stadium in Berlin before 75,052 fans. Months later in October of 1951, a film about the famous exhibition basketball team entitled The Harlem Globetrotters was released by Columbia Pictures.
BORN ON THIS DAY: GZA
On August 22, 1966: Hip hop artist and founding member of the Wu-Tang Clan, Gary Grice who is more commonly known as “GZA” and “The Genius” was born in Brooklyn. “Liquid Swords” was the second single from GZA’s second solo album of the same name which dropped in 1995 and was certified gold in 1996.
