MR DEMILLE, I’M READY FOR MY CLOSE-UP

On March 22, 1997: The Broadway play, Sunset Boulevard ended its run at the Minskoff Theatre after 977 performances. It won multiple Tony Awards, including Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role for Glenn Close. The play was based on the 1950’s film of the same name, which included Gloria Swanson as Norma Desmond’s delivery of the film’s famous line.

USAIR FLIGHT 405 CRASHED

On March 22, 1992: USAir Flight 405 crashed in Flushing Bay shortly after liftoff from LaGuardia Airport, killing 27 of those on board. The crash was attributed to ice accumulation on the aircraft, and the accident resulted in changes to aviation de-icing procedures.

BOB COSTAS

On March 22, 1887: Sportscaster Bob Costa was born in Queens, New York. He is a frequent primetime host of the Olympic Games broadcasts, and has won numerous Sports Emmy Awards.
