On April 17, 1949: Musician John Oates of Hall & Oates, was born in Manhattan. Hall & Oates had six tracks on the Billboard Hot 100, including the popular song “Kiss on My List” and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

BRIDGE TO THE NEW WORLD

On April 17, 1524: French explorer, Giovanni Verrazano discovered New York Bay by arriving on the southern tip of Manhattan in his ship, the Delfina. The Verrazano–Narrows Bridge, linking Staten Island and Brooklyn, was named in his honor.
