On August 31, 1997: The New York Yankees retired Don Mattingly’s number, 23. Mattingly spent fourteen years with the Yankees, spending seven seasons as a special instructor during spring training. After being passed over for manager, Mattingly joined Joe Torre with the LA Dodgers.

On August 31, 1997: The revival of The Gin Game, a two person, two act play written by D.L. Coburn, closed at the Lyceum Theatre. It had first premiered on the Great White Way in 1977 with great success and the 1997 revival was filmed and broadcast on PBS.
THE FIGHT IN FOREST HILLS FOR THE DAVIS CUP
On August 31, 1959: The final match of the 48th Davis Cup took place at the West Side Tennis Club in Forest Hills. Team USA took on Australia but ultimately lost to the Aussies who claimed victory with a final score of 3-2.
