On November 21, 1964: The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, connecting the boroughs of Staten Island and Brooklyn, opened to traffic. The double-decker bridge today carries almost 200,000 passengers a day as a part of I-278. The bridge also appears in a 1966 episode of Batman, but renamed as the fictional Amerigo-Colombus Bridge.

On November 21, 1871: Moses Gale, of Brooklyn, obtained the first patent for a cigar lighter, described as an “improvement in cigar lighters”. Bic, one of the world’s premiere lighter manufacturers, has well over $2 billion in assets.
On November 21, 1948: Founder and former executive chairman of Men’s Wearhouse, George Zimmer was born in New York City. The chain, which has over 1,200 retail locations across the country, used Zimmer in many of its commercials and featured his catchphrase “You’re going to like the way you look. I guarantee it.”
