On October 23, 1905: The official Staten Island Ferry, with service between Manhattan and Staten Island, opened. At the time, it competed with unregulated ferry services. Service is provided 24 hours a day 365 days a year, carrying around 21 million passengers each year.

On October 23, 1972: Pippin, directed and choreographed by Bob Fosse, premiered at the Imperial Theater. The original Broadway production ran for over 1,000 performances and saw numerous revivals and a film adaptation.
On October 23, 1905: Olympic champion swimmer Gertrude Ederle, “The Queen of the Waves,” was born in New York City. Ederle was the first woman to swim across the English Channel.
