CUE THE CRISIS
On October 22, 1979: The deposed Shah of Iran arrived in New York City to undergo surgical treatments at New York-Weil Cornell Medical Center after President Carter reluctantly allowed the Shah into the United States. The Iranian Hostage Crisis then ensued, which was documented in the recent, award-winning film, Argo.
OPERA FOR THE NOUVEAU RICHE
On October 22, 1883: The original Metropolitan Opera House opened at Broadway and 39th Street; the first performance was Gounod’s Faust. The Met was designed for the “nouveau riche” who had been shut out of the Academy of Music by “Old Money” families. The Academy of Music folded three years after the Met opened.

On October 22, 1903: Comedian and vaudeville actor Curly Howard, one third of the Three Stooges, was born in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. He starred in the comedy series The Three Stooges alongside his brothers Moe, Larry, and Shemp.
