LET’S MEET AT THE PLAZA

On October 1, 1907: The Plaza Hotel, designed by Henry Janeway Hardenbergh, opened to the public. Home to the loved character Eloise and to the shenangians of Kevin McAllister in Home Alone 2, the Plaza Hotel holds a beloved place in both American culture and in New York City history.

WALTER MATTHAU

On October 1, 1920: Actor Walter Matthau was born in the Lower East Side. Matthau, who passed away at age 79 in 2000, is most known for his role as Oscar Madison in The Odd Couple and for his many collaborations with Jack Lemmon.

YANKEES WILDCARD

On October 1, 1995: The Yankees won the first ever American League Wild Card, thus being able to enter the World Series (although they eventually succumbed to the Seattle Mariners). It was also the season that Derek Jeter made his debut with the team.
