A FASHION ICON WAS BORN
On October 28, 1858: R. H. Macy & Co. opened on Sixth Avenue between 13th and 14th Streets. The sales on the company’s first day of business was $11.08 (equivalent to $298.42 today). Its current location in Herald Square has been registered as a National Historic Landmark and was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
On October 28, 1886: President Grover Cleveland dedicated the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor. The statue’s completion was marked by New York’s first ticker-tape parade, and has since become a great American symbol, as well as an incredibly popular tourist attraction.
On October 28, 1979: Natina Reed, member of R&B trio Blaque, was born in New York City. A Protogée of Lisa Lopes, Reed released numerous songs with Blaque and also appeared in the 2000 film Bring it On. Reed died tragically last year in the midst of creating the new Blaque album.
