THE (LION) KING IS CROWNED
On April 9, 2012: The Tony and Grammy winning musical The Lion King surpassed The Phantom of the Opera as the highest-grossing Broadway show of all time. The Lion King, based on the Disney animated feature film of the same name, won six of the 11 Tony Awards for which it was nominated, including “Best Musical.” Still showing at the Minskoff Theatre, it is the fourth longest running show on Broadway and has grossed over $1 billion to date.
On April 9, 1966: Emmy, Grammy, and Tony Award-winning actress Cynthia Nixon was born in New York City. Nixon is best known for her role as “Miranda” in the Sex and the City series and films, as well as for her work as an activist, both for marriage equality and breast cancer awareness. She is a GLAAD Award recipient and a Susan G. Komen for the Cure Ambassador.
