On May 9, 1979: Actress Rosario Dawson was born in New York City. As a child, Dawson grew up on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, the same neighborhood that serves as the setting of for the 2005 film adaptation of Rent, in which she portrayed the character of Mimi Marquez.



On May 9, 1949: Six-time Grammy Award winner and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Billy Joel was born in the Bronx. His first hit (and his signature song) was the soft rock classic, “Piano Man.”



On May 9, 1982: The original Broadway production of 9 opened at 46th St. Theater for 739 performances. The five-time Tony Award winning musical was later adapted into an Academy and Golden Globe Award nominated film of the same name, starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Marion Cotillard, Penélope Cruz, Judi Dench, Fergie, Kate Hudson, Nicole Kidman, and Sophia Loren.
