OLIVIA THIRLBY

On October 6, 1986: Olivia Thirlby was born in the heart of New York City. The actress is best known for her role as Leah in the Oscar-winning film Juno and for her role as Natalie in the 2011 film The Darkest Hour. 

 

MACK & MABEL

On October 6, 1974: Broadway musical Mack & Mabel opened at the Majestic Theatre. The musical, starring Bernadette Peters and Robert Preston, received eight Tony nominations. The production did not last long on Broadway, however.

 

DOW JONES

On October 6, 2008: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed below 10,000 points for the first time since 2003, with stocks plunging as many as 800 points. The crash occurred as investors came to realize that the $700bn US bank bailout would not be a panacea for the financial crisis.
