On April 8, 1968: Actor and singer, John Schneider was born in New York City. He is known for his role as Clark Kent’s father on the series Smallville, and as Bo Duke in The Dukes of Hazard. Schneider is also one of the founders of the Children’s Miracle Network, a charitable organization that donates millions of dollars a year to children’s hospitals.
A CHAMPION’S COURAGE
On April 8, 1992: Tennis champion Arthur Ashe held a press conference in Manhattan to announce he was HIV positive, having contracted the disease years earlier during a blood transfusion. He was prompted to make his status public after learning a newspaper was preparing to run an article about it. Ashe passed away less than one year later in February of 1993.

On April 8, 1942: The ballet, Pillar of Fire by Arnold Schoenberg and Antony Tudor, made its world premiere at the American Ballet Theatre at the “Old Met.” Tudor is widely acknowledged as one of the greats of modern ballet.
