 On December 8, 1949: Classic musical Gentlemen Prefer Blondes opened at the Ziegfeld Theater on Broadway. “Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend” premiered as a part of the production, and the song itself gained worldwide fame when Marilyn Monroe sung the bit for the production’s film adaptation.
