A$AP ROCKY

On October 3, 1988: Rapper Rakim Mayers, aka A$AP Rocky, was born in Harlem. A$AP Rocky is a member of the hip hop collaborative ASAP Mob and also produces under the pseudonym “Lord Flacko.” Mayers got his start releasing free mix tapes online, including 2011’s Live. Love. ASAP. which garnered him a $3 million record deal.

AL SHARPTON

On October 3, 1954: Al Sharpton was born in Brownsville, Brooklyn. Sharpton was a prominent civil rights activist, having founded the National Youth Movement to raise awareness about impoverished youth when he was only 16 years old. Sharpton unsuccessfully ran for president in 2004, and has since become an incredibly important civil rights leader and public figure.

SHOT HEARD ‘ROUND THE WORLD

On October 3, 1951: New York Giants outfielder Bobby Thomson hit a pennant-winning, three-run home run off Brooklyn Dodgers pitcher Ralph Branca at the Polo Grounds. The homer became known as the “shot heard ’round the world” and the Giants won the game.
