AGNES DE MILLE
On September 18, 1905: Dancer Agnes de Mille was born in Morningside Heights. Beginning and continuing her career with the American Ballet Theatre, de Mille also choreographed numerous musicals, including Oklahoma!. Surprisingly, de Mille has also had an illustrious career as an author, penning five books in her time.
THE FIRST NEW YORK TIMES
On September 18, 1851: The first New York Times was published at one cent a copy. The title of the paper was then New York Daily Times, and included a large front page summary of the news coming from all over Europe. The edition can be read today on the Times’ website.

On September 18, 1985: The Broadway musical Song and Dance opened at the Royale Theatre. The production received eight Tony Award nominations, and featured the likes of Bernadette Peters, Christopher d’Ambroise, and Gregg Burge.
