NEW AMSTERDAM BECAME NEW YORK CITY
On June 6th, 1664: After the Second Anglo-Dutch War, New Amsterdam New Amsterdam was reincorporated under English law as New York City, named after the Duke of York (later King James II).
THE ELECTRIC IRON WAS PATENTED
On June 6, 1882: Inventor Henry W. Seely patented the electric iron, at the time it was called the electric flatiron. Early electric irons used a carbon arc to create heat, however, this was not a safe method. During the early 1950s electric steam irons were introduced.
BORN ON THIS DAY: COLIN QUINN
On June 6th 1959: Actor/Comedian/Writer Colin Quinn was born. Quinn was a featured member of the Saturday Night Live cast from 1997-2000. During his tenure, Quinn hosted the Weekend Update segment. After SNL, Quinn hosted a show on Comedy Central, Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn in 2002. The show ran for two years before being put on indefinite hiatus. He is also a frequent guest on the radio program, The Opie and Anthony Show.
