Where is he from? Astoria, Queens

What’s he done? Bennett attended New York’s High School of Industrial Art, but had to drop out to support his family. He was then drafted into the U.S. Army for WWII. His first big hit was “Because of You.” Other hits include “Rags to Riches,” “Beat of My Heart,” and of course his signature song: “I Left My Heart in San Francisco.”

Why is he an icon? Bennett is one of the most successful singers in the history of music. He has won 16 Grammy Awards and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

Quote: “I have a simple life. I mean, you just give me a drum roll, they announce my name, and I come out and sing. In my job I have a contract that says I’m a singer. So I sing.”
