FIONA APPLE

Singer, Songwriter

Where is she from? Manhattan

What’s she done? Apple began playing piano at age eight and began writing her own songs after the traumatic experience of being raped during her pre-adolescence. She became somewhat of an overnight success in the late 90s when released her first album Tidal in 1996 and won the Grammy for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance for her single “Criminal”.

Why is she an icon? Apple, who has released four albums, is known for her distinctive husky voice and jazzy, piano-driven music. She is also known for her angst-ridden lyrics and her propensity to shock. Her music style is quite unique as well, containing elements of jazz and alternative rock.

Quote: “You can live your whole life in your brain and not experience what’s around you. You go crazy that way.”
