EMPIRE STATE BUILDING
Where is it? Midtown Manhattan, Fifth Avenue and West 34th Street.
What’s it done? Completed in 1931, the 102-story skyscraper is currently the third-tallest completed skyscraper in the United States, the 22nd-tallest in the world, and the fourth-tallest freestanding structure in the Americas. It’s named after New York – the Empire State – and stood as the world’s tallest building for 40 years.
Why is it an icon? Gracing the New York City skyline with its impressive size and lighting design, the ESB is not only a New York City icon but also an American cultural icon. It is a New York City Landmark and a National Historic Landmark. It was even named one of the one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers.
