“Once you realize that heroes die, everything becomes that much more terrifying.”

-David Benioff

David Benioff might have been a nightclub bouncer, radio DJ, and English teacher, but his many works have proven that he was always meant to be a writer. From the debut of his first novel, The 25th Hour, to his work on the critically acclaimed television show, Game of Thrones, Benioff has proven that he has mastered the written word.

Benioff wrote his first novel, The 25th Hour, when he was teaching at Poly Prep High School in Brooklyn, New York. The book was well received, and he was hired to adapt it into a screenplay, which became the film that starred Edward Norton and was directed by Spike Lee. He would go on to write a collection of short stories called When the Nines Roll Over (And Other Stories).

Benioff would go on to write the screenplays for three more films: Troy, Stay, and X-Men Origins: Wolverine. His second novel, City of Thieves, was published in 2008. He has also been working on an adaptation to Charles R. Cross’s biography of Kurt Cobain.

Benioff’s greatest success would come when he and D.B. Weiss adapted George R.R. Martin’s fantasy book series, A Song of Fire and Ice, into the television show Game of Thrones for HBO. It has gone on to become a massively successful program that has become HBO’s flagship show.
