What’s he done? Flay dropped out of high school at age 17 and began working in a restaurant in the Theater District. He graduated from the French Culinary Institute in 1984, became executive chef at Mesa restaurant in NYC in 1991, and quickly became a partner. He made his first appearance on Food Network in 1994 and has since become a staple on the network. He’s opened several restaurants, hosted TV shows, and has written cook books.
Why is he an icon? Flay is one of America’s best known chefs. His restaurants include Mesa Grill in Las Vegas, New York, and the Bahamas; Bar Americain in New York and Uncasville, CT; Bobby Flay Steak in Atlantic City and Bobby’s Burger Palace in ten locations.
