“So as long as I’m a working actor, I can improve. I want to work with people that frighten me and excite me, and characters that I don’t believe I’m the best person for the part but I’m still gonna try anyway. Those are my favorite roles.”

-Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway is possibly the most polarizing actress in Hollywood. Despite her beauty, talent, and hard work she has invoked the wrath of a particular contingent – the self-dubbed “Hathahaters” – even though she has never been at the source of any real controversy. Whether you like, admire, or hate her, her status as an icon cannot be denied. She has won many awards including a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for her role as Fantine in Les Misérables. But before we talking about her accolades, lets cover how she got to this point.

Anne Hathaway was born in Brooklyn, New York, on November 12, 1982. As a youngster, she was accepted into The Barrow Group theater company. In 1999, she got her first big break on the short-lived television series Get Real.

Shortly after the series ended, Hathaway landed the role that would make her famous, playing Mia Thermopolis in The Princess Diaries. She followed her debut by starring in dramatic films such as Havoc and Brokeback Mountain. While most critics consider Havoc a misstep, Brokeback Mountain was a well-received Academy Award wining film.

The Devil Wears Prada

Hathaway would continue to build up her profile by appearing in films such as The Devil Wears Prada. It was a surprise summer box office hit, grossing over $300 million. Hathaway stars as Andy Sachs, an aspiring journalist who becomes an assistant to Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep) with the hope that it will help her land her dream job. She clashes with Meryl Streep’s character often as you can see in the above clip:

In Hathaway’s breakthrough dramatic role, she would go on to star as Kym Buchman – a drug addict who’s released for a few days to attend her sister’s wedding – in Rachel Getting Married. Hathaway received rave reviews for her role. She would even earn an Academy Award nomination. Her character’s complexities and flaws are in full display in this scene from the film:

Rachel Getting Married

Hathaway would continue to stretch herself by appearing in The Dark Knight Rises as Selina Kyle. With the exception of Rachel Getting Married, none of her performances approached the moral ambiguity of Selina Kyle. She had to train extensively in martial arts to meet the demands of the role, which payed off since she received favorable reviews for her role.

However her most recent performance in Les Misérables was the performance that won her the Academy Award. She cut her hair and lost a substantial amount of weight for the role. Ann Hornaday of The Washington Post wrote: “The centerpiece of a movie composed entirely of centerpieces belongs to Anne Hathaway, who as the tragic heroine Fantine sings another of the memorable numbers.” Her rendition of “I Dreamed a Dream” reached number 69 on the Billboard Hot 100. You can decide for yourself whether or not her performance was Oscar worthy; here is Hathaway’s version of “I Dreamed a Dream:”

Les Misérables

Hathaway embodies the spirit of New York. She had a dream, and worked toward its realization. She never stopped, and constantly worked at her craft and evolved as an actress. She is one of the Hollywood’s most sought after actresses because of it, and being only 30 years old, she promises to be a force in acting for years to come.
