We’re going to…

The Elk

Thanks to The Elk, New Yorkers can enjoy West coast vibes from the West Village in the form of fresh brewed Sightglass coffee and a delicious, healthy menu (thanks to chef Sam Talbot of Top Chef fame), as well as a selection of market and lifestyle items. A relative newcomer to the neighborhood, The Elk is a coffee shop and a general store all rolled into one. Homey, yet modern, the space is bright and open, and almost feels as if you’ve stepped foot into one of your friend’s better curated Pinterest accounts.

Claire Chan, the owner of The Elk, was compelled to create a space that brought the outdoors inside, and this comfortably chic spot is rife with nods to her Pacific Northwest upbringing — from the natural materials and clean lines to it’s warm, uncluttered layout. If you’re looking for a great cup of coffee, a flavorful bite, a unique gift, or just the perfect spot to escape the New York hustle, look no further than The Elk.

We’re watching…

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

They say one man’s trash is another man’s treasure, and that just might be the case for the newest addition to the Netflix original series lineup. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt follows the life of (you guessed it) Kimmy Schmidt, who is starting over in New York City — after spending the last 15 years living as a member of an underground doomsday cult. Not only did Netflix buy the 13-episode series from NBC, but they doubled-down and ordered two full seasons.

Speaking of NBC, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt has been incestuously cast with some of our favorites from NBC juggernauts 30 Rock and The Office. Created by Robert Carlock and the incomparable Tina Fey, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt stars the lovable Ellie Kemper and the lovably hate-able Jane Krakowski. And while we all might not have spent years in a bunker, hiding from the non-existent apocalypse, we can certainly relate to surviving in the City, and laughing at yourself along the way.

Staff Pick: I’m going to…

Beyond the Bookcase

Stefanie Skinner

In New York, you have everything you want at your fingertips, which can be both a blessing (Seamless) and curse (…Seamless). With so many options, instead of trying to find the time to have fun and be cultured, kill two birds with one stone, and get both at Beyond the Bookcase.

If great art, awesome music, tasty bites, sweet sips, and a fashionable scene sound like a good time to you, then I would plan on checking out Beyond The Bookcase at Mondrian SoHo, Fridays at 9:30 p.m. Pass through the revolving bookcase into a secret room (eat your heart out, Narnia), and enjoy many of the best things about living in NYC (for a reasonable, un-NYC price), all from one spot.
