On January 11, 1927: The Royale Theatre, designed by architect Herbert J. Krapp, opened with a production of the musical Piggy. In 2005, the venue was renamed for longtime Shubert Organization president Bernard B. Jacobs.

On January 11, 1943: Carlo Tresca, a labor organizer who ardently opposedthe infiltration of fascism, Stalinism, and Mafia into the labor movement, was assassinated by a gunman while crossing Fifth Avenue at 13th Street.
